Chess

Chess is a strategy board game intended for playing in 2 players against each other (or a player against chess AI). Chess belongs between games with no hidden information - opponents play the game with all game information freely visible on the board. Both players of the chess game start at one of the opposite sites of 64 squares large chessboard with the same game pieces on each side - a player playing with white color set starts the game.

ChessBoard

The standard chess game is played on a chessboard with dimensions of 8x8 fields with alternatively placed black and white background squares. Each square on the chess board is identified with a unique pair of a letter (a-h) with a number (1-8), for example e4.

Chess Pieces and their movement

• King - 1x on the chessboard on each side - King can move 1 vacant square to every side if it does not arrive in a "check" position after the move, or it would not approach into a direct border of the opposite king. One time per a game, King can oparticipate on a special move called castling.
• Queen - 1x on the chessboard on each side - Queen has the biggest freedom of movement from all chess pieces and can move over any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.
• Rooks - 2x on the chessboard on each side - Rooks can move over any number of vacant squares horizontally and vertically. One rook also participates in King’s special move called castling.
• Knights - 2x on the chessboard on each side - Knights makes a movement in the shape of "L" letter (1 square along and 2 squares ahead) in any direction.
• Bishops - 2x on the chessboard on each side - Bishops can can move over any number of vacant squares in any diagonal direction.
• Pawns - 8x on the chessboard on each side - Pawns may move over 2 vacant squares forward in their first move and 1 vacant square forward during their every next move. If a pawn reaches the last line of the chessboard on the opponent's side, it can be replaced for any chess piece.

Goal in the Chess game

Player’s goal in the chess game is to trap the opponent’s king in the check position with no option of escape - such a situation is called a checkmate, or alternatively Persian ““Shah Mat”.

General chess rules

Chess pieces are situated on the chess board in a clearly defined number and arrangement, a player playing with white set of pieces always starts the game by a first move. Then players do their movements alternately, a movement is required. If a player has no option of a free move while is not being in a check position, the game ends with a draw.

When a possible target move of a piece is directed to a position with an opponent's king, the opposite player is in check. Such player must make a move in the next turn via which he escapes the check position - either by a move with a king or by placing a different own piece into the trajectory of the opponent's piece from which he is in the check. The blockation is possible in the case of a check from all pieces except a knight. If a player is in check and is not able to escape from the position, he gets the checkmate and loses the chess game.

History of Chess

Chess game probably come from India sometime before the 7th century, having beginnings in the game Chaturanga. The game has changed only slightly in the last 1500 years, most visible improvements were adding a Queen in the 15th century and a few minor improvements in the 1800s. First World Chess championship was claimed in 1886 by Wilhelm Steinitz, since the 1948 Worlds Championship has been regulated by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE).
